Hamsterley forest is ~15 miles south-west of Durham – chuck your bike in the car, or you can even ride there via “Doctor’s gate”.

Lanchester Valley Railway Path  (Broom Park Picknic Area or Durham)easy roll along good surfaceRide to Consett to see the Sustrans Telescopes – up hill all the way there, but (almost) all down hill on the way back. If you want to go further, take the detour to see the Transformers too.
Ornsby Hill loop  (Lanchester)technical on the single track descents – gets very muddy in winter
 
Technical Woodland single track just out side Durham. You can ride there using the network of railway paths. 
Rag Path Wood (Broom Park Picknic Area or Durham)A fun ride through some fantastic woodland. The climbs are short but steep and loose – enjoy. Mud is a problem in the wood. Give the trail a rest when its wet and gloopySome more woodland trails within easy access of Durham.
