Hamsterley forest is ~15 miles south-west of Durham – chuck your bike in the car, or you can even ride there via “Doctor’s gate”.
Lanchester Valley Railway Path (Broom Park Picknic Area or Durham) | easy roll along good surface | ![]() | Ride to Consett to see the Sustrans Telescopes – up hill all the way there, but (almost) all down hill on the way back. If you want to go further, take the detour to see the Transformers too. |
Ornsby Hill loop (Lanchester) | technical on the single track descents – gets very muddy in winter | ![]() | Technical Woodland single track just out side Durham. You can ride there using the network of railway paths. |
Rag Path Wood (Broom Park Picknic Area or Durham) | A fun ride through some fantastic woodland. The climbs are short but steep and loose – enjoy. Mud is a problem in the wood. Give the trail a rest when its wet and gloopy | ![]() | Some more woodland trails within easy access of Durham. |
